Murder in the Magic City 2015

Last weekend, the Southern Sisters Chapter of SinC presented Murder in the Magic City in Birmingham, Alabama. Guests of Honor were Hank Phillippi Ryan and Craig Johnson. Other participants included my Writers Who Kill colleagues Warren Bull, Sam Morton, and Linda Rodriguez and friends Stacy Allen, Sonja Condit, Deborah Malone, Robert Mangeot, Terrie Farley Moran, Larissa Reinhart, and Maggie Toussaint. I enjoyed seeing Debra Goldstein. Organizer Margaret Fenton did a phenomenal job and Tammy Lynn Rushing took the group to Murder on the Menu in Wetumpka the following day. It was a wonderful weekend for hearing about writing and mysteries.

A Joy Forever

B.K. Stevens’ latest story “A Joy Forever” is featured in the March Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine and its cover art, where editor Linda Landrigan added the description “Homemaking in Hell.” The story is about florist Gwen Harlowe, who realizes too late that her new husband is determined she remain a submissive housewife. Gwen gets revenge through some newly acquired domestic skills. I had the privilege of meeting Bonnie at Malice Domestic, and having her on the panel I moderated. A brilliant writer and generous friend, Bonnie’s first novel, Interpretation of Murder, will be released this year by Black Opal Books.

3rd Edition Green Book!

As a law librarian and legal research teacher, I taught and befriended Deborah Ann Davis Hottel. She became a clerk for several judges on the SC Court of Appeals, then had a well-respected practice with the McNair Law firm. Our discussions about needing a SC guide to legal research and citation resulted in our co-authoring the SC Bar publication that has been recently released in a third edition. Deborah left us far too soon after surviving a double lung transplant. Her invaluable contribution to the “green book” (for similarity to Harvard’s “blue book”) is part of her great legal legacy.
