When my family moved to Columbia, the Confederate flag
flew over the dome. In 2000, my mother and I watched on the TV as Citadel
cadets moved it to the location behind the Confederate soldiers’ monument. This
week, the Senate and House passed a bill by 2/3s vote to remove it from the
Statehouse grounds and place it in the Confederate Relic Museum. Governor Haley
signed the bill with nine pens, one for each of the Charleston Nines’ families.
An estimated 10,000 people gathered to watch the Department of Public Safety
honor guard lower the flag. A truly historic time.
